Who is Ryan Haely, D.C.?
Dr. Haely was born in Cleveland, but spent most of his childhood in Michigan and Northwest Ohio. Dr. Haely graduated from Ohio Northern University with a bachelor's degree in business and finance, but soon realized that his desire to attend chiropractic school was growing stronger and stronger. So, in 1997 he started the Chiropractic Doctoral Program at Life University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Haely graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in March 2001. He served as a two-term officer in his extra-curricular technique association, won an award for outstanding clinic performance, and served as a post-doctoral intern for one of the premier Gonstead chiropractors in the U.S. His practice opened in the autumn of 2001.

How did Dr. Haely become interested in chiropractic?
As a high school and college athlete, Dr. Haely often found his body being abused, and eventually suffered a fractured vertebra, something that his doctors told him would render him unable to participate in any kind of sport ever again. His medical treatment consisted of prescription pain medications and rest; the medical doctors had nothing else to offer him. Finally, at the urging of his wrestling coach, Dr. Haely reluctantly agreed to see a chiropractor. After three months of chiropractic treatment, Dr. Haely's X-rays showed that the broken vertebra had healed to a point where he was safely able to engage in physical activity. Though his medical doctors failed to acknowledge the role of chiropractic in his healing, Dr. Haely realized the power of chiropractic care to help the body heal itself.

What is 'Gonstead' chiropractic?
The Gonstead chiropractic technique is one that was designed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead in the early part of the 20th Century. Dr. Gonstead was cared for by a chiropractor after having contracted rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 19. After the chiropractic care pulled him through his awful illness, Dr. Gonstead decided to become a chiroprator himself. He later developed a very successful technique that, unlike many other techniques, employed a systematic, technical procedure for assessing a patient's problem and determining the best course of treatment. The Gonstead system gives chiropractors who use it a specific, definite approach to treating every segment of the spinal column. It includes the use of instrumentation, digital palpation, motion palpation, visualization, X-ray and adjusting by hand only. Dr. Gonstead also designed several of the adjusting tables that you will see used in the Haely Family Chiropractic office. The reason Dr. Haely chose to use the Gonstead system, even though it is arguably the most difficult system to learn and perfect, is because of its incredible success in treating spinal subluxations that other techniques cannot relieve. His own experiences have proved to him that the Gonstead technique is simply the best, most effective chiropractic system available, and the one he knows will most benefit his patients.

What is a 'subluxation'?
A subluxation is a misalignment in the spinal column. When a vertebra is misaligned, pressure is put on the nerves that are encased in the spinal column. Of course, a person may have more than one vertebra out of alignment at the same time. As you can imagine, pressure on the central nervous system can create a host of illnesses, pains and maladies, since our nervous system controls everything that goes on in our bodies. If the nervous system is being squeezed or pressured by the spinal column, your body is not going to be operating at its optimum. This is analogous to what would happen if you had a blockage in your car's fuel pump: you might get the car to start, but it simply won't run as well as it would if the fuel pump were functioning properly. Dr. Haely's goal, then, is to remove the pressure being placed on your nervous system by adjusting the vertebra back to its "healthy" position. By doing this, your nervous system will be able to more effectively deal with the stresses and traumas it has to face every day. The body's own natural ability to heal itself is improved dramatically if the nervous system is allowed to do its essential work without interference from the spine. At the Haely Family Chiropractic clinic, each patient will be X-rayed and assessed based on his or her own unique chiropractic needs. The Gonstead system allows for this kind of personalized attention to your spinal health, using a variety of methods for analysis and treatment.

What kind of illnesses can chiropractic cure?
Oddly enough, chiropractic care doesn't really "cure" anything. Instead, it removes subluxations that might be causing your body to be unable to defend itself against disease and pain. So, sometimes people think of chiropractic as a "cure" for certain pains and diseases. The real cure comes from your own central nervous system, though the chiropractic adjustments clearly contribute to having a healthy nervous system. So, you can see why people sometimes think that chiropractic "cures" everything from headaches and back pain to arthritis and hemorrhoids!

What can I expect during my visits to see Dr. Haely?
Your first appointment with Dr. Haely will consist of you providing a medical history, a consultation with the doctor, and the taking of X-rays. Your first appointment should last just about an hour. At your second appointment, Dr. Haely will review with you what he found on your X-rays and will give what is called a "report of findings", in which your specific subluxations will be addressed. During this appointment, you will experience your first adjustment, and the total appointment should last approximately 25-30 minutes. The reason that Dr. Haely will not adjust you on your first visit is so that he may have time to fully analyze your x-rays and develop a treatment plan specifically for you. It is at the second visit that Dr. Haely will make a recommendation of a care plan. For the convenience of our patients, subsequent visits for adjustments should only last about 10-15 minutes. Please let our office manager know if you wish to speak at length with Dr. Haely when you schedule an appointment, since he will always make himself available for questions or discussion, but must schedule ample time to talk with you. Our goal is to make sure our patients do not have to wait but can instead be seen at their designated appointment time!

Will the adjustment "hurt"?
As you can imagine, many patients come to their chiropractor to relieve severe pain, and often there can be discomfort when that painful area is touched and adjusted. However, most patients report only mild discomfort, and many report that their pain is significantly reduced just moments after the adjustment. Icing the sore area for 20 minutes (no more) is extremely helpful and will reduce swelling in the affected area. However, if at any time you receive an adjustment that you feel is extremely uncomfortable, or if you experience pain that you are worried about, CALL Dr. Haely. The best way for him to know how to care for you is if you report what you are feeling.

What is the "Pain Scale"?
Dr. Haely will ask you to report how painful a particular area is, basing it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being your most severe pain, and 1 being the very mild or nearly non-existent pain. This will assist him in treating you properly.

How many times will I have to be adjusted after my initial exam and x-ray?
Dr. Haely will tailor a care plan to you, but generally you should expect to see him 2-3 times a week for the first few weeks, then less than this as your spine heads toward proper alignment. The goal is to get your spine to a point where you only need maintenance check-ups from Dr. Haely, perhaps once every 4-6 weeks. Patients with severe problems or in acute pain will, of course, need more care than patients who are already in good spinal health. Also, patients in extremely physically demanding jobs, such as plumbing, construction/building, factory work, or jobs that require repetitive motion or long periods of sitting or standing may need regular care for the rest of their lives, since their jobs place a lot of stress on their spine.

Can Dr. Haely help me with parts of the body other than the spine, like an ankle or shoulder?
Yes! Another great factor about the Gonstead system is that there is a protocol for adjusting "extremities", or parts of the body such as an ankle, foot, hand, wrist, shoulder, elbow or knee. Don't forget to mention these "troubled spots" to Dr. Haely.

How can I pay for my visits to Dr. Haely?

What if I have to cancel an appointment?
Please be considerate of other patients and call ahead to cancel your appointment. We will be happy to arrange another appointment for you at that time.
